This map was made to allow planners to assess sub regional impacts of groundwater water recharge versus withdrawal balance across eastern Pima County and to explore locations with vulnerabilities and strengths for the community, water providers and the environment.
PAG worked within the Safe Yield Task Force (SYTF) to assist Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR) in dividing the Tucson Active Management Area (TAMA) into sub-regional groundwater areas – called "Water Accounting Areas". Criteria used to consider these delineations include water provider infrastructure, aquifers, political boundaries, ADWR sub-basins, aquifers, and recharge sites.
This interactive map has been enhanced to aid the Lower Santa Cruz River Basin Study which is evaluating where physical water resources are needed to mitigate subregional supply-demand imbalances due to climate change and other factors. This map is being used to screen for locations that meet multiple climate adaptation objectives, such as preserving shallow groundwater dependent ecosystems. The geographic scope of the Study focuses on the basin managed by Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR), known as the Tucson Active Management Area. The Bureau of Reclamation will use surface and groundwater models projecting scenarios to the year 2060. Reclamation has provided the map layer of surface water basins called the Sacramento Soil Moisture Accounting (SACSMA) Model. Several map layers were provided by ADWR, Pima County, City of Tucson, and PAG to represent issues of interest to a variety of stakeholders. PAG is the lead agency on the project team for stakeholder engagement.
